Introduction/Hahndorfcrest_H.jpg

HAHNDORF is a small historic town of Germanic origin located in the Adelaide Hills Region of South Australia, Australia.

This project ('The Hahnwiki') is a combined interconnected community effort documenting, exploring and discussing anything and everything concerning the town. It is also a resource for organisations, clubs, individuals, and others within the overall community, plus a central resource with links to most external non-commercial sites with some relevance to the town.

The Introduction sets out the scope, objectives and restrictions associated with 'The Hahnwiki'.

Like her father before her Nora Heysen believed that drawing formed the foundation of all good art and certainly her initial training stressed the importance of drawing both in the Adelaide and London Academies that she attended. Indeed she was to devote herself to a ten year apprenticeship, commencing at the age of 15 (1926) when she left school to study at North Adelaide School of Fine Art under F. Millward Grey for a period of six years.

As a Young girl Nora had shown early artistic promise, a talent that was encouraged by her famous father who was to tutor in the development of many the fundamental skills, particularly drawing. In 1934 Nora travelled to London where she enrolled at the London Central School under Bernard Meninsky, James Grant and Alfred Turner (1934-38). Again the emphasis was on drawing and draughtsmanship.

She was to undergo further tuition at the Byam Shaw School in London under Ernest Jackson where the emphasis was on life drawing classes.

The drawings that you see in this particular Exhibition demonstrate not only the artist's impressive prowess as a drawer but also her fine draughtsmanship - "Nora Heysen is able to combine a superb grace of line with a tenacious grasp of internal modelling ". They are artistic notations carried out as part of a recognised discipline and a total devotion to drawing. Initial sketches quickly executed in pencil, charcoal or conte would provide the familiarity, correct scale and harmonious balance of the subject often before a larger oil picture was commenced. These drawings span a period of some 75 years from her earliest student exercises in Adelaide at 15 years of age to charcoal drawings from the model at age 92 completed at regular drawing sessions in the company of Judy Cassab, Margaret Woodward and Charles Blackman in Sydney.

This exhibition will serve to reinforce the increasing recognition of the status of Nora Heysen as an artist of quite exceptional ability and total professional dedication.

Hahndorf Craft and Produce Market

This 'Hills Friendly Market' is located at St Michael's Church on Balhannah Road and is held on the fourth Saturday in each month with the exception of December when it reverts to the third Saturday. The market has been running for some five years and is organised by a small group of very dedicated people.
Stalls are both indoors and outdoors with stall holders coming from far and wide. Produce and goods sold include fresh Coorong mullet (in season), local honey, fruit and vegetables, new and used tools, a huge variety of books and videos, locally made jams, wood turning, home made baby clothes, chocolates, greeting cards and similar items.
Added to the above is the sumptuous morning teas of fresh baked scones with jam/cream and tea/coffee. Barbecued sausages are also available.
Tourist buses are always welcome to use the Market as a point of call on their Saturday tours.
